Hammer mill, chopper or extruder - what is the difference?
sourced
A chaff cutter or chopper cuts coarsely; a hammer mill grinds finer, typically to 1-5 cm for straw; twin-screw extruders and macerators additionally rupture fibre and pump the slurry. Finer size costs more energy, so this is a yield-versus-parasitic-load trade, not a straight upgrade.
